A Contemporary Approach: Mother and daughter team tackle the misconceptions of modern design

Written by: Jill Martinez

For the past three years, Adison Norland, Acadiana’s premier supplier of contemporary furniture and accessories, has made it a priority to participate in the annual Acadiana Symphony Decorators Showhouse. “We’ve been on board with this project since the very beginning,” notes owner and licensed interior designer, Glenda Delahoussaye. “Our primary responsibility here is to really open people’s eyes to the joy of living with contemporary furniture and design. We use this as an opportunity to actively demonstrate how a more modern approach to design can be cozy, comfortable, and clean at the same time,” continues Glenda. “It’s about creating less clutter and inspiring the flow of positive energy throughout a space.”

Professionals Glenda and daughter and co-worker Heather Delahoussaye know that examining the interior through a contemporary lens can enhance even a more traditional or conservative architectural schematic. The Adison Norland bedroom design for this year’s showhouse was, first and foremost, dictated by the limitations of the space (all but one wall featured doors). The furniture they selected had to support the function of the room, while at the same time remain fairly minimal so as not to block any passageways or closets. Glenda and Heather focused on sumptuous, varied textures and utilized colors and prints that reflected nature as a way to soften the space. “Our focus for this room was to incorporate earthy elements into the décor. We wanted to inspire a sense of relaxation and well being within that space to prove that contemporary or modern doesn’t always mean stark, cold, and minimal,” explains Heather. The overall effect is an inviting, warm bedroom that was well received by all who visited.

“Although we’ve been in this business for 31 years, people still walk into our store expecting to see only primary colors or uncomfortable furniture. That is a common misconception.” Heather continues, “But once they spend a little time with us, looking at the way we combine furniture and accessories on the showroom floor, exploring the numerous colors and textures that are available, they begin to actually feel the impact of a well designed space. And that is why we do this.”

For the last three decades, Adison Norland has secured a reputation as the destination for contemporary, modern, and transitional furniture for any room of your home or office. They offer furniture for living rooms, dining areas, bedrooms, and offices including beds, sofas, sectionals, recliners, benches, coffee tables, shelving, entertainment units, dressers, desks, chairs, tables, and barstools. They also offer contemporary accessories: lighting, rugs, bedding, artwork, mirrors, clocks, and more. Glenda and Heather truly understand and value the need for functional designs to fit the modern lifestyle. As such, Adison Norland offers a range of products with a focus on clean lines, low maintenance, clever storage, and affordable furnishings. Finally, you don’t have to travel far to find something different for your space![This last line does not seem to fit with the article. I think the piece ends better without it.] ✦
